Agriculture Leases to be Focus of Discussion

Chuck Otte

The past few years have been a challenging time in agriculture as well as for agricultural leases. Many items have come up that when the original lease agreement was signed or the handshake occurred, weren’t ever thought about. Does the tenant have the right to double crop after wheat? Can the tenant graze the stalks after harvest, graze wheat pasture in the fall, or this year, harvest the drought failed corn crop?

Geary County Extension Agent Chuck Otte will lead a discussion of leases at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 13th at the Geary County 4-H / Senior Citizens Center on Kansas ag lease law and what goes into determining an equitable rent. Contrary to popular opinion, the Kansas ag lease law does not cover many of the most common contentious items that come along in farm leases. Otte will review the Kansas Ag Lease Law, highlighting key points that are most often misunderstood. That will be followed by a discussion of the items came up during the past crop season and steps that landlords and tenants should take to handle many of the unusual situations that seem to occur on a regular basis.

To register for the meeting contact the Extension office at 238-4161 or email Chuck Otte at cotte@ksu.edu by the close of business on Friday, November 9th. There is no charge to attend the meeting. The Central National Bank will sponsor refreshments for this meeting.
