There are 16,699 registered voters in the county, meaning 13.4% went to the polls on Tuesday. But that number is a little misleading. According to Geary County Clerk Rebecca Nordyke 36.4% of the registered Republican voters and 27.1% of the registered Democratic Party voters cast ballots. “We’ve got about a third of our registered voters who are unaffiliated, so obviously lots of them don’t show up for this primary election.” Nordyke felt many of them might vote in the November general election. “But they don’t want to choose a party and so they don’t come out to be part of the party nomination process.”
Statewide in the Democratic primary for Governor, State Sen. Laura Kelly won the nomination. The Republican primary for Governor had not yet been decided, with Jeff Colyer and Kris Kobach in a tight battle.
Scott Schwab won the Republican primary for Secretary of State. He will face Democrat Brian McClendon in the November general election.
