Whatever rain fell Monday evening was needed, but it it could create a small delay in the wheat harvest.
Geary County Extension Agent Chuck Otte said Monday afternoon before the rain showers moved through the county that the harvest had been going pretty good. He had talked with a number of producers that were just about complete or were finished with their harvest. Everyone was trying to finish their work ahead of any rain that might fall this week.
Otte stated, “The quality has been pretty good. The test weight got hurt by the dry weather. Yields, it’s not going to be a record year but I think it’s going to be better than I first thought it was going to be. We’ll be somewhere probably in the 30’s. I mean we should be up in the 40’s to 50’s but considering how little rain we’ve had I’ll take 30-35 bushel per acre as a county average.
