Blue Jay tennis player Mason Richards earned a second straight trip to the 6A State Tennis tournament by finishing 6th place in the Wichita Southeast Regional.
Last year, Richards qualified as a doubles player, but this year he battled through the singles bracket to qualify. In the first round, he defeated Turner Seals from Washburn Rural 6-4, 6-1. The next two rounds he matched up against players from Topeka High. Richards lost his second round match to Banks Whitney and then won a tough three set match 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 against Marcus Rodriguez to secure a spot in the state tournament.
The Blue Jay tennis team had trouble getting past the first round with their other events. Yuno Fernandez was the other singles entry. Nolan Rothfuss and Jace Goheen represented the Blue Jays in doubles along with Luke Craft and Aaron Reutzel.
Manhattan won the team championship. The 6A State Tennis Tournament will be held in Topeka on May 11-12th.
