EPA Awards Brownfields Assessment Grant to Flint Hills Regional Council

The Environmental Protection Administration has awarded a $600,000 Brownfields Coalition Assessment Grant to the Flint Hills Regional Council.  Community-wide hazardous substances and petroleum grant funds will be used to conduct up to 24 Phase I and 16 Phase II environmental site assessments.

Grant funds will also be used to prepare a GPS-enabled brownfields inventory, prioritize and select sites for environmental assessment, develop six cleanup plans along with two reuse plans, and conduct community outreach activities. Coalition partners are Junction City and Manhattan, plus Geary, Riley, Lyon and Morris Counties.

“This grant will give our region the opportunity to identify contaminated sites, develop cleanup plans and complete reuse plans that can be used for economic development opportunites in the Flint Hills,” said the Executive Director of the Flint Hills Regional Council Gary Stith.
