Walk and Talk

Chuck Otte

Manhattan, Kan. – The Flint Hills Discovery Center (FHDC) will host two Walk & Talk programs involving nature lessons taught by local experts.

“Beginning Birding with Chuck Otte” will occur on Saturday, March 31 from 8:00 – 10:00AM at Fairmont Park. Geary County Extension Agent, Chuck Otte will guide guests on a birding walk. He will review the basics of birding, from how to use binoculars to finding the best observing locations. Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring their own binoculars.  The event will be held rain or shine unless deemed unsafe. Experienced birders are also welcome!

“Mushrooms, Fungus and Fun” will occur on Saturday, April 14 from 10:00AM – 12:00 PM at Fairmont Park. Lyndzee Rhine, Naturalist at the Great Plains Nature Center in Wichita, Kan., will guide guests through a fungus foray located at the edge of Manhattan city limits. She will provide a basic introduction to the fascinating and increasingly important world of fungi and help guests familiarize themselves with some of the mushrooms grown in the area. Guests are encouraged to wear long sleeves, pants, tall socks and comfortable walking shows.

Pre-registration is required for both programs.  Programs are $3 for FHDC members and $4 for non-members.
