House approves measure to benefit Military impacted Districts

The Kansas House has approved a second student enrollment count date for Military impacted school districts.

For Geary USD 475 this is good news, because it would bring more funding to support local students.

State Representative Lonnie Clark noted that the first student enrollment count date is September 20th, the second would be later into the school year.

“The recount takes place on February 20th; and they average that over three years and 25 students plus or one percent above that count is what they use to determine the student enrollment and funding from the State.”

The measure now goes to the Senate.

“Last night, most of the Senators were in the house seeing what the result would be…and we feel pretty confident that the Senate will pass this bill,” said Clark. “There is some concern, we didn’t have 84 votes to get it through, we had 81 which would make it three short of being veto proof; I don’t see the Governor not signing this bill, I think it would be a disaster for him if he didn’t.”

Clark represents the 65th District of Kansas which includes Junction City.
