Biplane fly-in next weekend in Junction City

Pilots from across the country will descend upon Junction City next week for the annual biplane fly-in.

Jim Clark, Auto dealer, is part of the organizing committee for the event.

“It’s just a celebration of all things with two wings,” said Clark. “A fly-in is an opportunity for pilots to get together and show their aircraft – a lot of people have been to car shows and things like that – this is basically a car show with wings.”

Antique aircraft – that is still operational – from as early as the 1920s will be present during the fly-in event at Freeman Field in Junction City.

“Freeman Field is one of the most beautiful small airports you’ll ever find around this part of the state or in the central part of the country, because of the grass strips which is a must,” said Marvin Hornbostel. “If you’re going to fly an antique airplane it has to be a grass strip.”

For 23 years the fly-in was held in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Clark said that he attended that fly-in regularly throughout the years.

“The volunteer grow just got tired [of hosting the event]; and I had been going down there forever and I spoke with them and said ‘can we move it to Junction City’ and they said ‘more power to you’,” said Clark.

There will be flight simulators and other activities for children of all ages.

Planes will begin to come into town around Wednesday in preparation for the big event on Saturday.

The biplane fly-in is Saturday, June 3rd at Freeman Field in Junction City.
