Geary County officials have been reporting a high number of inmates in the county detention center in recent months.

The impact of crime is also being felt in the county attorney’s office.

Geary County Attorney Steve Opat said this week prosecutors are so busy that they have to catch up after court. “Which is hard to do because it seems like we’re in court all day almost every day.” Opat added the case numbers are ahead of probably where they’ve been in the last ten years. “The severity of the cases I think are what concerns the most.”

Opat said the crimes are across the board. “People are stealing more, people are beating each other more, stabbing and shooting each other more. And it’s not a lack of effort on the part of the police or the prosecutors to be overly lenient. We’re pounding on people. It’s just one of those cycle that we’re in.” The county attorney added sometimes those cycles occur.
