The Geary County Animal Shelter hasn’t had much of a break this year, as they’ve been inundated with animals. 

Florence Whitebread, County Commission Chair noted the animal shelter figures during the Monday county commission meeting.

“As of January 1st to the end of July we had 810 animals that’s come in to that shelter, that is way to many animals,” said Whitebread.

There have been previous reports that the spike is due to troop deployments and soldiers leaving the area.

Many don’t realize that Fort Riley has an animal shelter.

Whitebread said that there were rumors that it would be closing, but those rumors have been denied – as of now, county commissioners are awaiting further word as to what is going on at the animal shelter on Fort Riley.
