Senator Jerry Moran has turned his attention to Milford Lake where blue green algae problems have led to a series of warnings, watches, and even a few closures on the north end of the reservoir in recent years. There has been damage to recreation, the economy, not to mention the smell that can accompany the areas where the blue green algae accumulates the worst.

Moran told JC Post on Monday that his staff has visited the lake, and he’s seen it as well, noting he had been across the dam and was in Clay Center last week. “The reports from people who live in Wakefield, in particular, are pretty disturbing. I’ve already reached out to the Army Corps of Engineers, told them we expect them to be part of a process of solving this problem, not only in the short term but in the long term.”

Moran added it seems there is a likelihood of finding a long term solution. “The question is what do the Army Corps of Engineers, local individuals do today to rid us of this problem, and particularly the smell. We’ve lived this issue before. My first one with blue green algae was at Marion Reservoir, and we battled it, and it’s become more prevalent. But the Corps, I think, has a responsibility here in water flows to help us get this flushed down and out of Milford.”
