The Geary USD 475 Board of Education will talk about building a new Junction City High School.

It is on the Board agenda in their meeting that begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Devin Center.

A bond issue would be necessary to pay for the facility, but the Superintendent of Schools Dr. Corbin Witt explained staff has developed a plan where it could be paid for by heavily impacted military aid received by the school district, and by state funding aid. No increase in the local property tax would be necessary.

Witt estimated an $85 million bond issue would be necessary, and the new school would have to be built at the same location as the current JCHS facility. “But we would have to have a bond issue to get approval from the community to do an $85 million. It would not increase anyone’s mill levy at that point if we did that, but in order to do that it would take almost all of our heavily impacted ( federal military ) aid that we have received and what we’ll receive over the next couple of years.”

The subject will be a discussion item for the Board of Education when they meet Tuesday. Final action is not scheduled at this point.
