Geary County rural firefighters responded to a pair of grass fires on Thursday.
There were no injuries reported, but this occurred as farm producers are beginning the annual spring burning of grassland to remove old vegetation and prevent cedar tree growth.
Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges said Geary County firefighters assisted Dickinson County on a fire about two miles north of Chapman. He estimated approximately 100 to 150 acres burned. They responded to another fire Thursday night in southern Geary County near Dwight. “A farmer waited too late in the afternoon to start his controlled burn and then he got tired and wanted us to come and put it out. That one was not one that should have happened.”
Berges estimated the latter fire involved burning 200 acres, and he noted firefighters extinguished the fire at the edge of that blaze.
More burning is expected during March, April and early May.
