Unexpected fireworks disposal keeps 911 centers busy

Screen Shot 2014-04-15 at 2.03.07 PMINMAN—Reno and McPherson County 911 call centers were flooded with phone calls Tuesday morning.

A loud explosion was reported.

According to McPherson 911, Showalter Fireworks, located on North Plum near the McPherson/ Reno County line was disposing of old fireworks they can no longer sell or use for public displays.

Law enforcement authorities reported they had not been notified in advance and were caught off guard by the big bang.

Employees with Showalter say the disposal is on a regular basis, as required by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
They did not know why this disposal was loud enough to be heard and felt over a wide area. There were no injuries reported.
