Fire Update

Geary County rural firefighters have responded to a pair of fires early Wednesday afternoon.

No injuries have been reported.

In one case Sheriff Tony Wolf said firefighters had basically gotten the fire in a pasture on Erickson Road knocked down. “The problem that we’re concentrating on is that we’ve gotten roughly 100 big round bales right up next to a Morton building and a house, and they are on fire. We’re trying to keep that knocked down so it doesn’t burn the Morton building or the house there.

Wolf confirmed the property belongs to George Erichsen, and the house was the Alvina Erichsen house.

There was a second fire in the Ava and Reynolds area on the west side of Milford Lake.   Wolf said there was a large grass fire that got into a wheat field. “There are quite a few houses out here in this area to, with a lot of crp grass around them, and that’s not a good mix for fire, especially not today.” The sheriff added authorities had that blaze under control and were doing mop-up work. “The rest of it has burned on down into the wildlife and hunting areas along Milford Lake. The only place that it can go now is down into the Lake so that’s contained, and we’re just going to let that go down into the Lake.”

Earlier today a tree blew over and knocked down a power pole northwest of Junction City near the US 77 – K57 intersection. That caused a small grass fire but it was extinguished. Following that fire there were more than 1400 power outages reported in Geary County, according to a Westar Energy web site. An early afternoon check revealed there were no more power outages in Westar Energy territory in  Geary County.
