Officers of the Junction City Police Department will be on the streets through out this month for night time seat belt enforcement.
Extra officers will be in the downtown area at the intersection of 6th and
Washington streets to observe those that are not buckled up and take enforcement action.
The State of Kansas requires all drivers and passengers to wear seat belts or depending on age, a child restraint seat. For those 18 years of age or older the fine for not wearing a seat belt is $10 with no court costs. For children 14 to 17 years of age the fine is $60 with no court costs. Children under the age of 14 not wearing a seat belt, the fine is $60 with an additional $116 for court costs.
Officers working are paid from a grant from the State of Kansas Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Safety and Technology that the JCPD has contracted with to do the night time seat belt enforcement each month throughout the year.
During the month of January, 44 drivers or passengers were cited for not wearing their seat belt, no proof of insurance, no driver’s license or expired vehicle registration.
