The Geary County Rural Fire Department responded with one truck put out a grass fire along I-70 near mile marker 309 at 1:23 Saturday morning. The location is about 12 miles east of Junction City.
Rural Fire Chief Garry Berges confirmed it was just a small grass fire of less than one-half acre. “It looks like somebody tossed a cigarette or something out the window.” The site was on state right-of-way.
About 6:30 a.m. Saturday Berges reported Geary and Riley County Rural Fire Departments were dispatched to an area several miles farther east in Riley County for a semi-truck on fire. “We got on scene, the tractor unit of the semi was completely engulfed in flames. We were able to keep the fire from going into the trailer unit, which was full of paper products.”
No one was injured in that blaze, which occurred near mile marker 318 on the Interstate.
According to Berges the paper was bulk mail that was being transported to a processing center.
Because of that fire a section of highway in Wabaunsee and Riley Counties had to be closed for a period of time, but was later reopened.
