The 29th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration in Junction City returned downtown this year allowing for the return of the commemorative march.
For the past couple of years march has not been held due to the location of the celebration. Kim Milleson, USD 475 School Board Member, said that the return of the march was fantastic. “You didn’t have that area to march before and this just brings it all back. I was extremely excited for it to be here and I think everybody else was to.”
Returning the march downtown was important according to Larry Hicks who is a member of the Martin Luther King Celebration Committee. “It was something that Mrs. Ruby Stevens established 29 years ago. We were not able to do the march last year because it was at the convention center but to revive it and bring it back here again was extremely important.”
The march started at the C.L. Hoover Opera house going north on N Jefferson St one block to Eighth St. Back west on Eighth St for a block before heading back south on N Washington St and back west on Seventh St finishing up once again in front of the opera house.
