There is a proposal to put a Regional Visitor’s Center near the intersection of K-177 and I-70 in Geary County.

That subject is on the agenda for Friday’s Flint Hills Regional Council meeting in Westmoreland.

The FHRC Board of Directors will discuss whether or not they want their paid staff to look into assisting with the proposal according to Bill Clark, FHRC Executive Director.

“What I expect to happen on Friday at our Regional Council meeting is for the board to actually have a vote and make a stand and make a determination where they want their paid staff to go with this project,” Clark said.

Geary County and Junction City officials have been opposed to the proposed location, fearing it will send visitors into Manhattan and not farther west to Junction City. But Clark recently informed the elected officials the vote on the Council was running strongly in favor of that location for the center with only opposition from Junction City and Geary County.

Clark noted that the center would generate a little over $150,000 per year in sales tax revenue for Geary County, and about $1.5 million per year for the state of Kansas.
